Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Rwanda. Rwanda does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Luxembourg passport holders, but your airline might check for at least 3 months beyond your travel dates.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Rwanda does not have a fixed minimum amount, but officers occasionally ask how you'll support yourself. Carry at least $100 USD in cash or have a credit card with a decent limit — ATMs are available in Kigali.Recommended
Visa-free since 2024
Rwanda introduced visa-free travel for all African Union passport holders, including Luxembourg, in 2024. This policy is still relatively new, so some immigration officers may not be fully familiar — just politely explain you're visa-free.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of around 30,000 RWF (about €25) per day. If you overstay more than 30 days, you risk deportation and a ban from re-entering Rwanda.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for visa-free and visa-on-arrival passengers. Join the visa-free queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. No fee, no form. The whole process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Rwanda.
