Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave Belgium (and the entire Schengen zone). It must have been issued within the last 10 years. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately in case of loss.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Budget airlines often check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a signed letter from your host with their address and contact info. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €45 per day of your stay. A recent statement from the last 30 days works fine. Officers rarely check this for Latvian passport holders.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Belgium. Keep track using the EU's Schengen calculator app.
EU citizen rights
As a Latvian passport holder, you have the right to enter, live, and work in Belgium without a visa. The border check is usually quick — just show your passport and answer a few questions.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you leave
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or save confirmations on your phone. Get travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM.
2
Arrive at the border (airport, port, or land crossing)
At Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi (CRL), join the queue for non-Schengen passport holders. Have your passport and supporting documents ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. Answer clearly: tourism, visiting friends, business meetings, etc. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Belgium.

Up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling window. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Belgium. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, count those days too.
Generally no. The visa-free 90-day limit is strict. For longer stays (work, study, family reunion), you need a national visa or residence permit from the Belgian embassy before you travel.
You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires during your stay, you could face problems at the border when leaving. Renew it before you travel.

Yes, as an EU citizen you can work in Belgium without a work permit. But if you're planning to work, you may need to register with the commune for stays over 90 days. For short business trips (meetings, conferences), no special permission is needed.
