Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the Dominican Republic. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at Punta Cana and Santo Domingo will verify it on arrival.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Dominican Republic
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at passport control. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers at the border sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Immigration may ask for evidence of sufficient funds. A credit card or a recent bank statement on your phone usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
6-month passport rule is strict
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires in less than 6 months from your arrival date, you'll be denied boarding — no exceptions. Renew your passport well in advance.
Keep your tourist card slip
When you enter, immigration gives you a small slip. Don't lose it — you'll need to hand it back when you leave. If you lose it, expect delays and a small fee at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Punta Cana or Santo Domingo airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Queue at a counter. Hand over your passport and the tourist card form (given on the plane or at the counter). The officer stamps you in — no payment needed for Latvians. Keep the stamped slip; you'll need it when you leave.
2
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your bags. Customs uses a green/red channel system. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel. Random bag checks happen.
3
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and shuttles are outside. Have your accommodation address ready for the driver.

Frequently asked questions

No. Latvian citizens get the tourist card free on arrival. It's valid for 30 days. To stay longer, visit the Dirección General de Migración in Santo Domingo to extend.
Yes, but apply before your 30 days expire. Go to the immigration office (Dirección General de Migración) in Santo Domingo. The cost is around 1,000–2,000 DOP (roughly €15–30). Overstaying without permission can result in fines.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before booking flights.
If you're connecting to another international flight and don't leave the airport transit area, you don't need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need the same tourist card as regular visitors.
The tourist card is for tourism and business meetings only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed, but enforcement is lax for short stays. For longer stays, consider the Dominican Republic's Digital Nomad Visa (up to 12 months).
Children need their own passport (same 6-month validity rule). If only one parent travels, bring a notarised consent letter from the other parent, especially if the child's surname differs. Immigration may ask for it.
The departure tax is usually included in your airline ticket. Check your ticket details — if not, you'll pay around 20 USD (cash or card) at the airport before security.
