Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before departure. Fees range from $25 to $80 USD depending on visa type (tourist, business, medical). Approval usually comes within 72 hours — check your email and carry a printed copy to the airport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6+ months validity
Your Latvian passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of arrival in India. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel bookings or an invitation letter from your host in India can speed up the immigration process. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a fixed itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. While not always checked, having proof of at least $300–$500 USD equivalent avoids any questions.Recommended
eVisa must be approved before you fly
You cannot get an eVisa on arrival. Apply at least 5 business days before your flight. Airlines will check your eVisa status before boarding — no approval means no boarding.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa, passport, and tickets as PDFs on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose your phone, you can still access them. Also carry a printed backup in your carry-on.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa Online
Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in and fill out the eVisa application. Choose the correct visa type (e-Tourist, e-Business, or e-Medical). Upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport info page. Pay the fee online (around $10–$80 depending on duration). You'll get a reference number — save it.
2
Wait for Approval
Most eVisa applications are processed within 3–5 business days. You'll receive an email with the eVisa approval attached. Print it or save a PDF on your phone. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the approval.
3
Pack Your Documents
Before heading to the airport, gather: your passport, printed eVisa (or digital copy), return ticket confirmation, and first night hotel booking. Also download an offline map of your arrival city — you may not have mobile data immediately.
4
Arrival at Indian Airport
At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreigners' or 'eVisa' immigration counters. Have your passport and eVisa ready. The officer will check your documents, take fingerprints, and stamp your passport. This usually takes 5–10 minutes. Major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai all have dedicated eVisa lanes.
5
Collect Baggage and Exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Then proceed to customs — if you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall where you can buy a local SIM or activate your eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

The eVisa allows a maximum stay of 60 days per visit for tourism and business. For medical eVisa, it's also 60 days. You cannot extend an eVisa — you must leave before it expires. If you need a longer stay, apply for a regular visa at the Indian embassy in Riga.
Yes, but only at designated airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Goa, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow, Tiruchirappalli, Varanasi, and a few others. Also at major seaports. Check the official list before booking flights.
Rejections are rare but can happen due to incorrect information or criminal record. You'll receive an email explaining the reason. You can reapply after fixing the issue, or apply for a regular visa at the Indian embassy in Riga. The eVisa fee is non-refundable.
If you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you need to collect luggage or switch airports, you'll need an eVisa. Transit passengers with a layover over 24 hours may also need a visa.
No. The eVisa is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or medical treatment. Any paid work, volunteering, or long-term assignments require a work visa obtained from the Indian embassy before travel.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), the approved eVisa (printed or digital), your return ticket, and proof of first night accommodation. Immigration officers may also ask about your travel plans — have a rough itinerary ready.
No, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in private hospitals can be high — a simple consultation might cost $50–$100, and a hospital stay can run into thousands. Insurance also covers trip cancellation and lost luggage.
