Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Moldova
Your Latvian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Moldova. Moldova does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for EU passport holders — as long as your passport covers your stay dates, you are fine.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Border officers at Chișinău Airport sometimes ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight reservation ready. This is not always checked, but better to have it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Moldova. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if they do, you will need to show where you are staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly €50 per day of stay. Border officers almost never ask for it for EU passport holders, but it is a legal requirement.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Moldovan border officials check passport validity down to the day. If your passport expires less than 6 months after your entry date, you will be denied entry. No exceptions.
Register if staying more than 72 hours
If you're staying in private accommodation (not a hotel), you must register with the migration office within 3 days. Hotels do this for you automatically. Failure to register can result in a fine of up to 4,000 MDL (about €200).

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Chișinău International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Border Control' (Passport Control). There are separate queues for Moldovan/EU citizens and for other nationals — join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' line. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. The whole process usually takes 5–10 minutes.
2
Land border crossings
If arriving by bus, train, or car from Romania or Ukraine, you'll go through Moldovan border control at the crossing point. The process is the same as at the airport: present your passport, show your return ticket if asked, and receive an entry stamp. Expect slightly longer queues at busy crossings like Leușeni-Albița.
3
Registering your stay (if staying longer than 72 hours)
If you plan to stay in Moldova for more than 72 hours, you must register your address with the Bureau for Migration and Asylum within 3 days of arrival. Hotels usually do this for you automatically. If staying with friends or in a private rental, you need to go to the local migration office yourself — bring your passport, rental contract, and the host's ID copy. The registration is free.

Only if you stay longer than 72 hours. Hotels handle this automatically. If you're in private accommodation, you must register in person at the Bureau for Migration and Asylum within 3 days. No, Moldova does not offer a visa on arrival for Latvian citizens. You would need to apply for a long-stay visa at a Moldovan embassy before traveling if you plan to exceed 90 days.
Technically, the requirement is 6 months validity from your entry date. Border officials are strict about this — if your passport expires sooner, you risk being denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport before you go.
That's fine. Your return or onward ticket can be to any destination outside Moldova. Just make sure it's a confirmed booking, not a flexible date or waitlisted ticket.
No, Latvian citizens do not need a visa to transit through Moldova. The same visa-free rules apply — you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, even if you're just passing through.
Moldova uses the Moldovan leu (MDL). Euros and US dollars are widely accepted at exchange offices and banks, but you'll get better rates if you exchange cash. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants in Chișinău, but less so in rural areas. ATMs are common in cities.
