Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Latvian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Montenegro. No minimum validity period beyond your departure date is required. Carry your passport with you at all times — police checks happen, especially in coastal towns.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Montenegro
Immigration officers at Podgorica and Tivat airports ask for a return or onward ticket. A bus or ferry ticket out of Montenegro also works. If you overstay the 90-day limit, you face a fine of €200–€500 and a possible entry ban.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers occasionally ask for a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Airbnb bookings are accepted — just make sure the address matches what you tell the officer.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Border officials may ask how you'll fund your stay. Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least €50 per day. Cash is rarely checked, but having €500–€1,000 in euros avoids any questions.Recommended
6-month passport rule strictly enforced
Montenegrin border police check passport validity from your entry date, not your departure. If you have less than 6 months left, you will be refused entry. No exceptions.
No visa, no fee, no application
You don't need to apply for anything before you travel. Just show up with your passport. No visa fee, no paperwork, no embassy visit.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at any Montenegrin border crossing
You'll enter through Podgorica Airport, Tivat Airport, or a land border from Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, or Albania. All have the same visa-free rules.
2
Join the non-EU/EEA queue
At airports, look for signs saying 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU'. Latvian passport holders are not EU for immigration purposes here.
3
Present your passport and any requested documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp you in — usually takes 30 seconds.
4
Receive your entry stamp
Check the stamp says the date of entry. No visa sticker is needed. You're allowed up to 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entering. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days are up — contact the local police station in Montenegro.
No, not for stays under 90 days. Hotels and hosts usually register you automatically. If you're staying in private accommodation, your host should do it within 24 hours. It's their responsibility, not yours.
You'll likely be denied entry. Border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, absolutely. All land borders have the same visa-free rules. Just have your passport ready. There may be short queues in summer.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Montenegro can be high, and your Latvian health card (EHIC) does not cover you here.
You'll be fined — typically around €50–€200 depending on how long you overstay. You may also be banned from re-entering Montenegro for a period. Don't risk it.
No. Even a same-day trip counts as a visit, but you're still visa-free. Just bring your passport. The border crossing at Debeli Brijeg is straightforward.
