Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Panama. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Tocumen International Airport. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Airlines also enforce this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers sometimes ask for proof of sufficient funds. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around $500 USD for your stay should cover it.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the paperwork
You don't need a visa, but immigration still expects to see a return ticket and accommodation booking. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Panama. Airlines check this before boarding. If you're close to expiry, renew first.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Most flights from Europe land at Tocumen. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are usually two queues: one for Panamanians/residents, one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and accommodation booking. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have nothing to declare. Random checks happen.
4
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and ride-shares are available outside. Official airport taxis have fixed rates to the city (around $30-35).

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Panama before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines (around $50-100) and a ban from re-entry for a period. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before traveling.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and denied entry by Panamanian immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. No exceptions.
No. Panama does not require an online arrival declaration for Latvian passport holders. You just fill out the standard paper immigration card on the plane or at the airport.
Yes. The same visa-free rules apply at land borders. You'll need the same documents: valid passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. The Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia is impassable by road — you must fly or take a boat.
You need one to enter. Buy a fully refundable ticket out of Panama and cancel it after you arrive, or book a cheap onward flight to a neighboring country. Immigration will ask to see it.
Not for entry, but it's strongly recommended. A simple stomach bug or a broken bone can cost thousands. Many travel insurance policies cost less than $50 for a short trip.
Officially, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism only. However, Panama has a separate 'Short Stay Visa for Remote Workers' (the 'Visa de Estancia Corta') that allows up to 9 months. You'd need to apply for that before traveling.
