Latvian passport holders can enter Vatican City without a visa for tourism or short visits. As of 2026, you must meet standard entry requirements: passport validity and proof of onward travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Vatican City. Since Vatican City is inside Schengen territory, the 90/180-day Schengen rule applies to your overall stay in the zone — not just Vatican City.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at the Vatican's entry points (through Italy) routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy showing your departure from the Schengen zone within your allowed 90-day window.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Vatican City or Italy. Officers rarely check it, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay. This is rarely requested for short visits, but keep a copy handy.Recommended
Vatican City is inside Rome
You enter Vatican City on foot from Rome. There is no airport or train station inside Vatican City. Plan your travel to Rome first, then walk to St. Peter's Square.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Vatican City, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, you may be denied entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the Vatican border
Vatican City is a landlocked enclave within Rome. You enter on foot from St. Peter's Square or through the Vatican Museums entrance. There is no airport — you fly into Rome (FCO or CIA) and take a train or taxi to the Vatican.
2
Present your passport at the border
At the Vatican border checkpoint, hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity and may ask for your return ticket and accommodation proof. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Receive entry stamp (if applicable)
If the officer decides to stamp your passport, they will do so. Not all visitors get stamped — it depends on the officer. If you want a stamp, ask politely.
4
Proceed into Vatican City
Once cleared, you can enter. There are no additional checks for most visitors. Enjoy St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel.

Frequently asked questions

No, you do not need a visa. Latvian citizens can enter Vatican City visa-free for tourism or short visits. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
There is no official maximum stay for visa-free visitors, but since Vatican City is tiny (about 0.44 km²), most visits last a few hours to a day. If you plan to stay longer, you'd need to arrange accommodation within Vatican City, which is extremely limited.
You need a valid passport (6+ months validity), a return or onward ticket, and proof of first-night accommodation. Travel insurance is strongly recommended but not always checked.
Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave and re-enter, but that's impractical given the size. Most people visit as a day trip from Rome.
No, Vatican City has no airport. You fly into Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or Ciampino Airport (CIA), then take a train, bus, or taxi to the Vatican. The border is on foot.
Since Vatican City is inside Rome, you'll enter Italy first. Latvian passport holders do not need a visa for Italy for short stays (up to 90 days in the Schengen area). Your entry to Italy covers your visit to Vatican City.
Overstaying is unlikely given the short visit duration, but if you somehow overstay, you could face fines or a ban from re-entering the Schengen area. Always leave before your allowed time expires.
