Libyan passport holders need an eVisa to enter Ethiopia. Apply online before you travel — it's straightforward and avoids airport queues. As of 2026, the process takes a few days, so plan ahead.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Ethiopia eVisa
Apply online at the official Ethiopia eVisa portal before you fly. The eVisa is valid for tourism or business visits and takes up to 3 business days to process. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport — immigration at Addis Ababa Bole Airport checks it before stamping you in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Ethiopian immigration enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly — airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ethiopia
Immigration officers at Bole Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return flight. Have a printed itinerary or digital boarding pass ready — they may deny entry if you cannot show a ticket out of the country.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Ethiopia. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a recent bank statement showing available funds. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during your stay.Recommended
eVisa only — no visa on arrival for Libyans
Libyan passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival at Bole Airport. You must apply for and receive the eVisa before you fly. Airlines will check this at check-in — no eVisa, no boarding.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Ethiopia, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Ethiopian eVisa website (evisa.gov.et). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 2–3 business days, but can be faster. You'll receive the approved eVisa by email — print a copy and save a PDF on your phone.
2
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, gather: your printed eVisa, passport with 6+ months validity, return/onward ticket (screenshot or printed), and first night hotel booking. Keep them in a folder you can grab quickly.
3
Arrive at Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival' — but since you have an eVisa, go to the 'eVisa' or 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and boarding pass. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over $500 or restricted items. Walk through and you're in the arrivals hall.
