Libyan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Libyan nationals, so you must apply through a British embassy or visa application centre before you travel. Plan ahead — the process involves an online application, an in-person appointment, and a decision that can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK VisaYou must get a visa stamped in your passport before you fly – there is no online application for Libyan citizens.
Apply at a British embassy or consulate
Libyan passport holders must obtain a UK visa before travel. You are not eligible for the UK eVisa system, so you must apply through a British embassy or consulate in person or via a visa application centre. Allow ample processing time.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date – if it's too close, renew it before applying for your visa.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in the UK (i.e., valid until at least 2027-02-07 if arriving on 2026-08-07).Required

At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the UK visa vignette and entry stamp. Ensure no pages are damaged or missing.Required
Return or onward ticketHave your flight booking ready – you may need to show it at immigration.
Proof of departure from the UK
You must have a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you will leave the UK before your visa expires. Border officers may ask to see this.Required
Proof of fundsBe ready to prove you can support yourself – carry recent bank statements or a sponsor's letter.
Sufficient money for your stay
You must be able to show you have enough money to cover your accommodation, living costs, and return travel for the duration of your stay. Bank statements or sponsor letters are typically accepted.Required
Accommodation detailsHaving your accommodation address and booking confirmation handy speeds up entry.
Where you'll stay
You may be asked to provide proof of where you will stay in the UK, such as a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host.Recommended
Travel insuranceProtect yourself against unexpected costs – insurance is a smart idea.
Medical and trip coverage
While not a legal requirement for entry, travel insurance covering medical expenses and trip cancellation is strongly recommended for your stay in the UK.Recommended
UK arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any online arrival form before landing.
Not required
No arrival declaration (such as a passenger locator form) is required for entry to the UK for Libyan passport holders as of 2026.Not required
No eVisa option for Libyan passport holders
Even though the UK has an eVisa system for many nationalities, Libyan citizens are not eligible. Do not attempt to use any online eVisa portal — you must apply through the official GOV.UK route and attend an in-person appointment.
Visa application centre in Tripoli
The UK Visa Application Centre in Tripoli is operated by VFS Global. Check their website for current opening hours and appointment availability, as services can be suspended or changed at short notice.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in the UK. If it expires sooner, your visa will be refused. Renew your passport before applying if needed.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to GOV.UK and fill out the visa application form. You'll need to select your visa type (e.g., Standard Visitor, Student, Work). Have your passport details, travel plans, and address history ready. After submitting, you'll get a reference number and be directed to book your biometric appointment.
2
Pay the visa fee
Pay the fee online using a credit or debit card. The standard visitor visa fee is £115 (2026). Keep the payment confirmation — you'll need it for your appointment.
3
Book and attend biometric appointment
Book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Tripoli (operated by VFS Global). Bring your printed application form, passport, and payment receipt. At the appointment, you'll give fingerprints and a photo. The staff will also check your documents.
4
Submit your supporting documents
Upload your supporting documents to the VFS Global portal before your appointment, or bring paper copies to the VAC. They'll be scanned and sent to UK Visas and Immigration for processing.
5
Wait for a decision
Processing times vary, but for visitor visas it typically takes 3–6 weeks. You can track your application online using your reference number. If approved, your passport will be returned with a vignette (sticker) in it.
6
Travel to the UK
When you arrive at a UK airport (e.g., Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester), go to the 'Non-EU' or 'All Other Passports' queue. The Border Force officer will check your passport, visa, and may ask questions about your trip. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready.

Frequently asked questions

No. Libyan passport holders are not eligible for the UK's eVisa system. You must apply through the standard visa application process at a British embassy or visa application centre.
As of 2026, a standard 6-month visitor visa costs £115. If you need a longer-term visa (2, 5, or 10 years), the fees are higher — £432, £771, and £963 respectively. These fees are non-refundable.
No. The TB test is only required if you plan to stay in the UK for more than 6 months. For a standard visitor visa (up to 6 months), you don't need it.
No. Visitor visas are not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave the UK and apply for a new visa from outside the country. Overstaying can lead to a ban from re-entering.
Bring your printed application form, your passport, the payment confirmation, and any supporting documents you haven't uploaded online. The VAC staff will check them and take your fingerprints and photo.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to pay the fee again and address the reasons for refusal. There's no appeal for visitor visa refusals, but you can request an administrative review in some cases.
