Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Rwanda requires your passport to be valid only for the length of your stay — no 6-month rule. Airlines may still enforce 6 months validity at check-in, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask for it if you look unsure about where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $100–$200 per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show you're not working illegally.Recommended
Visa-free entry is automatic — no pre-approval needed
Libyan passport holders do not need to apply for a visa or e-visa before travel. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. The 30-day stay is granted on arrival at no cost.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Rwanda immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines also enforce this rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to board your flight.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity and at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night's accommodation. Save screenshots of everything on your phone.
2
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
Most travellers arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL). Follow signs to 'Immigration' — there are separate queues for visa-free arrivals and visa-on-arrival. The visa-free queue is usually faster.
3
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket. Answer clearly and politely. The process takes 2–5 minutes.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct. You're now free to enter Rwanda.
5
Collect luggage and exit
Proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall where you can buy a local SIM, exchange money, or arrange transport.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before you travel or leave Rwanda and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines or entry bans.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline. Rwanda immigration strictly requires 6 months validity from your date of entry. Renew your passport before you travel.
Yes, if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including Libya), you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. It's a good idea to get the vaccine anyway — it's required for many African countries.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all land borders. The process is similar to the airport — show your passport, return ticket, and accommodation. Land crossings can be slower, so allow extra time.
The currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). US dollars are widely accepted for larger purchases, but you'll need local currency for small shops and taxis. ATMs are common in Kigali. Exchange money at the airport or banks.
Rwanda is generally very safe for tourists. Kigali is one of the safest capitals in Africa. Petty crime like pickpocketing is rare but possible in crowded areas. Use common sense — don't flash valuables, and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Rwanda. If you need more time, apply for a visa extension before your 30 days are up — but note that extensions are not available for visa-free entries. Best to leave on time.
