Madagascar passport holders need a visa to enter France in 2026. You must apply at the French embassy or consulate in Antananarivo before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for tourism.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a short-stay Schengen visa to enter France. Apply at the French consulate or visa centre in Madagascar — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. Start your application on the France-Visas portal, then book an appointment at TLScontact or VFS Global.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the whole time you plan to be in France. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen area
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed attestation d'accueil from your host. Carry a printed copy in case your phone has no signal.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request proof you have at least €65 per day of stay (or €120 if no accommodation is prepaid). Bank statements, traveller's cheques, or a sponsor letter work. Keep originals handy.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 2–4 weeks, and the embassy may be slow during summer. Apply at least 6 weeks before your flight to avoid last-minute stress.
Schengen area access
A French visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You don't need separate visas for each country.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the French embassy
Go to the French embassy in Antananarivo (or the visa application center they use). Submit your completed application form, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight itinerary, and accommodation proof. Pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults). Processing takes 2–4 weeks.
2
Wait for visa approval
The embassy will check your documents and may call you for an interview. Once approved, you'll get a visa sticker in your passport. Check the validity dates — you can only enter France during that window.
3
Arrive in France and go through immigration
At the airport (Charles de Gaulle, Orly, etc.), join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport — that stamp shows your legal entry date.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. Unless you're carrying restricted items, you'll just walk out.
