Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Guatemala. Airlines at departure may enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Guatemala City's La Aurora Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked where you're staying during the entry interview. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a host works fine — keep it handy with your passport.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them — no specific minimum amount is published.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines often refuse boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity left — even if Guatemala would let you in. Check your passport's expiry date before booking anything.
No visa needed — but keep your return ticket handy
Immigration at La Aurora Airport routinely asks for proof of onward travel. A printed or digital copy of your return flight is enough.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA)
Most travellers fly into Guatemala City. After deplaning, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Queues can be 20–60 minutes depending on flight arrivals.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly — tourism is fine.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and writes '90 days' or 'ESTADÍA 90 DÍAS'. Check it's correct before stepping away.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red light system — if you get green, walk straight out.
