Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Senegal. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires within 6 months, carry a printed copy of your onward ticket to show you won't overstay.Required
Visa on arrival
Obtain at the airport upon arrival
You can get a visa on arrival at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) in Dakar. Have 50,000 XOF (about $85 USD) in cash ready — the visa counter does not accept cards. Fill out the arrival form on the plane or at the counter before queuing.Check visa portalRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Immigration officers at Dakar airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket showing you leave within the visa-on-arrival validity period (usually 30 days). Airlines also check this before boarding. Have a copy on your phone or printed.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A simple booking confirmation email works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least 200,000 XOF (about $340 USD) in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Immigration rarely asks, but if you look like you're traveling on a shoestring, they may request proof. A credit card with a decent limit also works.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash — Euros or CFA francs. There are no ATMs before immigration. Bring enough to cover the fee and a little extra for incidentals.
Yellow fever certificate required
If you're arriving from Madagascar or any country with yellow fever, you must show your yellow fever vaccination certificate. Without it, you may be vaccinated on arrival or denied entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There's a dedicated counter for visa-on-arrival applicants. Join the queue and have your passport, photo, and cash ready.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be handed a short form — name, passport number, flight details, hotel address. Fill it in while waiting. A pen is handy.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, photo, and cash. The officer will process your visa sticker and paste it into your passport. This usually takes 5–10 minutes.
4
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, go to the main passport control queue. Present your passport with the visa, and your boarding pass. They may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Senegal.

Yes. The visa on arrival is available at all official land border crossings, including the main ones from Mali, Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and The Gambia. The process is the same — fill a form, pay, get the sticker.
The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. If you need longer, you can apply for an extension at the Direction de la Police des Frontières in Dakar. Extensions are not guaranteed and cost extra.
Immigration may deny you entry if you can't show proof of onward travel. A refundable ticket booked and then cancelled after entry is a common workaround, but it's safer to have a real onward booking.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including Madagascar). You'll need to show your yellow fever vaccination certificate (the 'yellow card') at immigration. If you don't have it, you may be vaccinated on arrival or denied entry.
Yes, you can apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office in Dakar (Direction de la Police des Frontières, near the airport). The cost is around 20,000–30,000 CFA. Apply before your initial visa expires.
