Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Myanmar passport holders must apply for an Ethiopian eVisa at the official portal before departure. The application takes about 10 minutes — upload your passport photo and pay the fee online. Approval usually comes within 3 business days, but apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Ethiopia. Airlines at Yangon check this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you won't board. Bring a photocopy of the bio page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Bole International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. If you're overlanding to a neighboring country, a bus ticket or flight booking out of Ethiopia works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation from Booking.com or Agoda is fine. Hostels and guesthouses in Addis Ababa are used to providing confirmation letters.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Ethiopia is a cash-heavy country — credit cards are not widely accepted outside major hotels. Immigration rarely checks this, but having cash visible helps if asked.Recommended
eVisa Only at Bole International Airport
The eVisa is only valid for entry through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. If you arrive by land or at another airport, you need a different visa. Plan your route accordingly.
Keep Digital Copies
Save your eVisa, passport, and travel insurance as PDFs on your phone and email them to yourself. If you lose the printout, you can still access them.
