Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need an eVisa to enter Papua New Guinea. Apply online at the official Immigration and Citizenship Authority portal. Processing takes a few business days — do not book non-refundable flights until approved.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Papua New Guinea. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers ask for proof of onward travel at Port Moresby airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Papua New Guinea. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show at least 500 PGK (approx. 140 USD) per day.Recommended
Apply early — processing can be slow
eVisa processing times are not guaranteed. Some applicants report delays of 2 weeks or more. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the approval in hand.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa approval, passport photo, and travel insurance on your phone and email. If you lose the printed copy, you can still show the digital version at immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Papua New Guinea eVisa website. Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days, but can be longer. Apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive eVisa approval
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. The approval is linked to your passport number — you don't need to show a physical sticker.
3
Arrive at Port Moresby (Jacksons International Airport)
Most international flights land at Port Moresby. Go to the immigration counter, hand over your passport and printed eVisa. The officer will stamp you in. Have your return ticket and accommodation confirmation ready in case they ask.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's a customs check on the way out — declare any restricted items. Then you're free to go.
