Apply before travel
You need a visa to enter Romania. Apply online at the Romania eVisa Portal — the process takes a few days. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the full duration of your stay in Romania. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Border officers will ask for proof of a return or onward flight out of Romania or the Schengen zone. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking or an invitation letter from your host speeds things up at immigration. Officers may ask where you are staying — having a printed confirmation avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you can cover your stay. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show at least €50 per day of your trip.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take up to 45 days during peak season (summer). Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
Schengen rules apply
Romania uses Schengen visa rules. Your visa's validity and stay limits are the same as for any Schengen country. Overstaying can result in a ban from the entire Schengen area.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to evisa.mae.ro/en, create an account, fill out the application form, upload required documents, and pay the visa fee. After submission, you'll get a confirmation with an appointment link.
2
Attend the embassy appointment
Book an appointment at the Romanian embassy in Yangon (or the nearest embassy if you're elsewhere). Bring your printed application, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, and bank statements. The officer will check your documents and take your biometrics (fingerprints).
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can take up to 45 days if more checks are needed. You'll get your passport back by courier or you can collect it in person.
4
Arrive in Romania
At Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP) or any other entry point, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly — they just want to confirm you're a genuine visitor.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you're a Myanmar passport holder and you leave the international transit area (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), you need a Schengen transit visa. If you stay airside and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you don't need a visa. Check with your airline.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about 380,000 MMK at current rates). Children 6–12 pay €40, and children under 6 are free. Fees are paid in local currency at the embassy.
A short-stay Schengen visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The exact duration is stamped on your visa sticker. You cannot extend it beyond 90 days.
Yes, Romania is part of the Schengen area (as of 2024). A Romanian-issued Schengen visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days total. Just make sure Romania is your main destination (longest stay).
You can appeal the decision within 15 days of receiving the rejection letter. The appeal goes to the Romanian embassy that processed your application. There's no additional fee, but you'll need to provide new evidence addressing the reason for rejection.
Immigration officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds. The general guideline is €50 per day of your stay. Have bank statements or a credit card handy. If you're staying with a friend, a sponsor letter plus their bank statement works.
Yes, you can apply at the Romanian embassy in the country where you legally reside (not just visit). You'll need to show proof of legal residence, like a work permit or student visa. Processing times may be longer.
