Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Hong Kong. Hong Kong does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule beyond your stay, but airlines sometimes check for at least 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter before you get your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with a friend, have their name, address, and phone number written down — officers may ask for it during questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Officers can ask to see proof you can support yourself during your 14-day visit. Have a bank statement or credit card ready — showing around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hong Kong. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by immigration. Check your passport now and renew if needed.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save screenshots of your passport info page, return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance on your phone. If you lose your documents or your phone is stolen, you'll have backups. Also email copies to yourself.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your booking confirmations and travel insurance on your phone.
2
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents, Chinese nationals, and foreign visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you'll be staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay duration (14 days). Check that the stamp is correct before stepping away. You're now free to enter Hong Kong.
5
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your checked luggage from the carousel. Then proceed through customs. There are two channels: 'Nothing to Declare' (green) and 'Goods to Declare' (red). Unless you have restricted items, use the green channel.

Overstaying is a serious offence. You may be fined up to HK$50,000 and imprisoned for up to 2 years. In practice, first-time overstays of a few days often result in a warning and a fine, but it's not worth the risk. Leave before your 14 days are up.

No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or transit only. You cannot take up employment, study, or establish a business. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa or permit before you arrive.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), return/onward ticket (printed or on your phone), and hotel booking confirmation. Immigration officers may ask for any of these. It's also wise to have travel insurance details and a local SIM for communication.
As of 2026, there are no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry into Hong Kong. However, always check the latest travel advisories from the Hong Kong government before you travel, as rules can change.
The currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, some smaller vendors and taxis only take cash. It's a good idea to carry some HKD for small purchases. ATMs are available at the airport and throughout the city.
