Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Iraq eVisa
Apply online at the official Iraq eVisa portal before you travel. The eVisa is valid for single entry and allows a stay of up to 30 days. Processing takes 1–3 business days, and you must print the approval letter to present at the border.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Iraq
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Iraq
Immigration officers at Baghdad and Erbil airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your Iraqi host. Officers may ask for this during secondary screening, especially if you are arriving without a pre-arranged tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels, so carry US dollars in small denominations.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no exceptions
You cannot get a visa on arrival in Iraq. You must have the eVisa approved before you fly. Airlines will check it at check-in.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa, passport, and hotel booking as PDFs on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose your printed copies, you'll have backups.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Iraqi eVisa portal (evisa.iq). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, double-check: passport valid 6+ months, printed eVisa, return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them all in your carry-on.
4
Arrival at Baghdad International Airport (BGW)
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'eVisa' counters. Present your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp your passport. The process is usually quick — 10–15 minutes.
5
Exit the airport
After stamping, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. There's usually no baggage check for personal items. Then you're free to enter Iraq.
