Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Russia. Border officers at Russian airports check validity carefully — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied entry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Russian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Russian border officials may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel reservation confirmation or a formal invitation letter from your host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means for your stay
Officers can ask you to show you have enough money for your trip. Carry a bank statement or credit card statement showing available funds.Recommended
No extensions — plan your exit
The 30-day visa-free period cannot be extended for any reason. Overstaying even one day can trigger fines and a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder for day 28 to be safe.
Keep your migration card safe
The small paper slip you get at entry is critical. Lose it and you'll face a fine (up to 2,000 RUB) and delays when leaving. Store it inside your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave home, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or screenshot everything — phone screens can die.
2
Arrive at a Russian border checkpoint
You'll enter through an international airport (Moscow Sheremetyevo, St Petersburg Pulkovo, Vladivostok, etc.) or a land border crossing. Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue — not the Russian citizens line.
3
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation address. Answer clearly — they speak basic English at major airports but a translation app helps. They'll stamp your passport with an entry date.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The stamp shows the date you entered and the maximum stay (30 days). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave. Don't lose your migration card if one is issued (small paper slip).
5
Enjoy your visa-free stay
You can stay up to 30 consecutive days. No extensions are possible. If you overstay, you'll face fines and possible deportation. Plan your exit before day 30.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free agreement does not allow extensions. You must leave Russia before the 30th day. Overstaying can result in fines (up to 5,000 RUB) and a ban from re-entering for up to 5 years. If you need more time, apply for a tourist visa before you travel.
If you're staying in a hotel, they handle registration automatically. If you're in a private apartment, your host must register you within 7 business days. Failure to register can cause problems when leaving. Ask your host to confirm it's done.
Yes. There are several land border crossings, including Kyakhta (by bus from Ulaanbaatar) and Solovyovsk (by train). The same visa-free rules apply — 30 days, no extensions. Border processing can take longer than at airports, so arrive early.
You'll be fined 2,000–5,000 RUB (about $25–$60 USD) and may be deported. A deportation ban can last 5 years. Don't risk it — set a reminder to leave on day 28 or 29.
Yes, at most entry points. You'll receive a small paper card (arrival/departure slip) when you go through passport control. Fill it out in Russian or English. Keep the departure portion with your passport — you'll hand it back when you leave. Lose it and you'll face delays and a fine.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or private visits only. Working or studying requires the appropriate visa. If you're caught, you'll be deported and banned.
Contact the nearest Russian migration office (GUVM) immediately. They can issue a short extension in genuine emergencies (medical, flight cancellations). Bring your passport, migration card, and proof of the delay. It's not guaranteed, but it's your only option.
