Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Guatemala. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Guatemalan law, but airlines sometimes enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket showing you'll leave within 90 days. Airlines at check-in in Malta also verify this — without one, you may be denied boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from a host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation or a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly 500–1,000 USD for the trip. Officers almost never check this for Maltese passport holders, but it's smart to have it ready.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Guatemala. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding — no exceptions.
Keep your entry slip safe
When you enter Guatemala, immigration may give you a small paper slip (tarjeta de turista). Keep it with your passport — you'll need to hand it back when you leave. Losing it means extra paperwork and a small fee at immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Guatemala City's La Aurora Airport (GUA) or any land border, join the 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners) queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. They'll stamp you in for up to 90 days.
3
Collect your passport and proceed
Once stamped, you're free to enter. Keep the entry slip (if given) with your passport — you'll need it when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Guatemala (to a neighbouring country like Belize, Honduras, or El Salvador) and re-enter. The 90-day clock resets upon re-entry, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, no visa is needed. But if you leave the transit area (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need to meet the same entry requirements — valid passport, onward ticket, etc.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Guatemalan immigration. Renew your passport before travelling. There are no exceptions.
No, there's no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if you look like you might overstay or work illegally, an officer could ask. Having a credit card or some cash (about $50/day) is sensible.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — many travellers do it without issues, but it's not officially permitted. If you plan to work for a Guatemalan company, you need a work visa.
You'll be fined when you leave. The fine is about 10 GTQ (roughly $1.30) per day overstayed, paid at immigration. Overstays beyond 90 days can also result in a ban from re-entry for a period.
No mandatory vaccines for entry from Malta. But the CDC recommends hepatitis A, typhoid, and routine vaccines. Yellow fever vaccine is required if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (not Malta).
