Malta passport holders can enter Mexico without a visa for stays up to 180 days. This policy has been stable for years and remains unchanged in 2026. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún airports routinely ask for a return or onward flight within 180 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they scan the barcode at the booth.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask for bank statements or credit cards to confirm you have enough money for your stay. A recent bank statement showing a few hundred dollars or a credit card with available credit works fine.Recommended
Keep your FMM stub safe
The bottom half of the immigration form is your proof of legal entry. You must hand it back when you leave Mexico. Lose it and you'll face delays and a fine at the airport.
No visa needed — but don't wing it
Even though it's visa-free, immigration officers can still deny entry if you can't show a return ticket or look unprepared. Have your documents ready and answer questions clearly.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your ticket and booking on your phone.
2
Fill out the immigration form
You'll receive a paper immigration form (FMM) on the plane or at the airport. Fill it out clearly — name, passport number, flight info, and address in Mexico. Keep the bottom half after entry; you'll need it when you leave.
3
Go through immigration
At Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN), or any other airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport and completed FMM. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer briefly. They'll stamp your passport and return the FMM stub.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. You may be selected for a random customs check — just walk through the green light if not selected.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave before day 180 or risk fines and a ban. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate before your trip.
Yes, an onward ticket to any country outside Mexico works. It just needs to show you're leaving before your 180 days are up. A bus ticket to Guatemala or a flight to Cuba counts.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline. Even if you get to Mexico, immigration can refuse entry. Renew your passport before you travel.
No fee for visa-free entry. The FMM (immigration form) is free. Some airlines or airports may charge a small tourism tax (around $20–30 USD) included in your ticket — check your booking.
Technically, the tourist permit doesn't allow paid work for a Mexican employer. But remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated. If you plan to stay long-term, consider Mexico's temporary resident visa for digital nomads.
You'll be fined when you leave — roughly $50–100 USD depending on how long. Overstays over 180 days can lead to a ban from re-entering for up to 5 years. Don't risk it.
Not required for Malta passport holders. But if you look like you might work illegally or have no means of support, the officer can ask. Having a credit card and some cash (around $500 USD equivalent) is smart.
