Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Rwanda
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Rwanda does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. Airlines may still ask for 6 months validity at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready. Rwanda immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for proof of departure. A same-day or next-day flight out of Rwanda works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for your entire stay. If staying with friends or family, have their contact details and address ready. Immigration rarely asks, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the visit
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $300 USD for your 30-day stay. Rwanda immigration occasionally asks for proof of sufficient funds at the border.Recommended
Visa-free entry is straightforward
No application, no fee, no arrival form. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. The whole process at Kigali airport usually takes under 15 minutes.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying your 30-day visa-free period can result in a fine of approximately $30 per day and a possible entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket and first night's accommodation confirmation. If you want to be extra prepared, get travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL)
Most visitors fly into Kigali. After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. The queue moves quickly — Rwanda's immigration is efficient.
3
Present your passport at immigration
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional fees or forms for visa-free entry.
