Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Mexican passport needs to be valid for at least the full period you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not enforce the 6-month rule for Mexican passport holders — just cover your travel dates. Airlines may still check validity at check-in, so carry a printed copy of your itinerary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria or Schengen area
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too. Budget airlines check this at check-in and may deny boarding without it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a host with their address and phone number is enough. Have it printed or saved offline on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Bulgarian law requires visitors to show at least €50 per day of stay. A bank statement, credit card, or cash works. In practice, officers rarely ask for this unless you look like you might overstay or work illegally.Recommended
90-day limit is shared across Schengen
Bulgaria counts your 90-day visa-free stay against the same 180-day rolling clock used by all Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Spain, or any other Schengen state, that time counts toward your 90 days. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN)
The currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), not the euro. 1 BGN is roughly €0.51. ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for smaller shops and rural areas.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days allowed (usually 90).
2
Present documents and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer clearly and briefly. If asked, show your return ticket and hotel booking.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once approved, you'll get an entry stamp. Check that the date is correct before walking away. You're now free to stay up to 90 days. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot take paid employment. If you want to work, you need a work visa or residence permit arranged before you travel.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Bulgaria (and the Schengen area) after 90 days. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen zone.
If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register with the local police within 5 days. But since your visa-free stay is exactly 90 days, this doesn't apply to most short-term visitors. If you plan to stay longer via a visa, registration is required.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You could face a fine (typically €100–€500), deportation, and a re-entry ban of up to 5 years. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
No. Airlines and border guards will deny boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date. Renew your passport before traveling.
Bulgaria is not yet a full Schengen member for internal border control, but the 90-day rule applies to the entire Schengen area. If you've already spent 90 days in other Schengen countries, you cannot enter Bulgaria for additional time. The 90-day clock is shared across all Schengen states.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Bulgaria can be high, and your Mexican health insurance likely won't cover you abroad. A basic travel insurance policy costs around €20–€50 for a week.
