What happens at the border

1
Complete Check-Mig online
Go to migracioncolombia.gov.co and fill out the free Check-Mig form. Do this between 1 and 5 days before your flight. You'll enter your flight details, passport info, and accommodation address. Save the confirmation PDF or screenshot.
2
Arrive at immigration counter
At Bogotá El Dorado, Medellín José María Córdova, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Extranjeros'. Join the queue for non-Colombian passports. Have your passport, Check-Mig confirmation, and return ticket ready.
3
Receive entry stamp
The immigration officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. They may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for an extension later.

After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over the duty-free limit. Keep your boarding pass handy.

Frequently asked questions

No, the standard tourist entry is 90 days and it is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you would need to leave Colombia and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You will be denied entry. Colombian immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before you travel. If you're in a hurry, expedited renewal at a Mexican passport office takes about 1-3 business days.
Not for most travellers. The yellow fever vaccine is only required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (e.g., Brazil, Venezuela, parts of Africa). If you're flying directly from Mexico, you don't need it. But if you plan to visit the Amazon region in Colombia, the vaccine is strongly recommended.
You may be delayed at immigration or even denied boarding by your airline. The form is mandatory. It's free and takes about 10 minutes online. Complete it 1-5 days before your flight. If you forget, some airports have kiosks, but it's better to do it in advance.
Yes, the same visa-free rules apply at land borders. You'll still need to complete the Check-Mig form before crossing. Common land crossings include the Rumichaca bridge from Ecuador and the Simón Bolívar bridge from Venezuela. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation ready.
There is no official minimum amount for Mexican tourists. Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds, but if they do, showing a credit card or a bank statement with a few hundred dollars is usually enough. It's more about showing you can support yourself during your stay.
Tourist entry does not permit formal employment with a Colombian company. However, remote work for a foreign employer is generally tolerated for short stays. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days or earn income from Colombian sources, you'll need a specific visa (e.g., digital nomad visa).
