Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Visa on arrival
Apply for an Ethiopian eVisa at evisa.gov.et before departure. The visa on arrival is available at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for most nationalities, but the eVisa saves you queue time. Processing takes 3 business days, and the fee is around $52 USD for a 30-day single-entry visa.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Original passport
Your Mexican passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Ethiopia. Immigration at Bole Airport checks this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding in Mexico City.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Ethiopian immigration requires a confirmed onward or return ticket. Airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass — have a printed or digital copy ready. If you plan to overland exit, a bus or train booking may be accepted, but a flight ticket is safest.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Immigration officers at Bole Airport occasionally ask for a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host. Have a printed booking confirmation or a letter with your host's contact details and address ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do, you need to show you can cover your expenses. ATMs in Addis Ababa dispense Ethiopian Birr, not USD.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash (USD or EUR). There are ATMs after immigration, but not before. Bring enough cash with you — around $50 USD per person.
Visa on arrival only at Bole Airport
This facility is only available at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. If you arrive by land or at another airport, you must have a visa in advance.

What happens at the border

1
Land at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. The counter is before passport control. You'll fill out a short application form and present your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation.
2
Pay the visa fee
Hand over the fee in USD or EUR cash. The officer will issue a receipt and then affix the visa sticker into your passport.
3
Proceed to passport control
Join the queue for foreign passports. Present your passport with the new visa sticker. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer briefly and honestly.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Ethiopia.
