Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Apply for your ETA early
Don't wait until the day of your flight. While most ETAs are approved instantly, some applications are referred for manual processing and can take up to 12 hours. Apply at least 3 days before departure.
Biosecurity is strict
Australia has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. Declare all food, plant material, wood products, and animal items on your incoming passenger card. Fines for undeclared items can be AUD 2,664 or more.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Use the Australian ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or the official website. The application asks for your passport details, travel plans, and a few personal questions. Approval is usually instant or within a few hours. Cost is about AUD 20.
2
Book your flight and accommodation
Once your ETA is approved, book your flight and first night's accommodation. Keep the booking confirmations saved on your phone or printed.
3
Arrive at the airport in Malaysia
Check in for your flight. The airline will verify your ETA before issuing a boarding pass. Have your passport and ETA approval ready.
4
Go through Australian immigration
At the airport in Australia (e.g., Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane), join the queue for foreign passports. You'll be asked for your passport and may be asked about your travel plans, accommodation, and return ticket. The officer will stamp your passport.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity rules.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Malaysian passport holders must have a visa before travelling to Australia. The most common option is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601), which you apply for online. It's valid for 12 months and allows stays of up to 3 months per visit.
Download the Australian ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and answer a few questions. Pay the AUD 20 fee (about RM 60). Most applications are approved instantly or within a few hours.
Most ETAs are approved within minutes. In some cases it can take up to 12 hours. Apply at least a few days before your flight to be safe.
No. The ETA does not allow extensions. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (e.g., Visitor visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires.
You will be denied boarding by the airline at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or any other departure point. There is no visa-on-arrival for Malaysians in Australia.
Yes. Immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel. It's a standard requirement for all visitors. Book a refundable ticket if your plans are uncertain.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Australia has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Malaysia, so a hospital stay can cost thousands of dollars. A basic policy is cheap peace of mind.
