Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the full period you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Airlines and border officers check this at check-in and arrival. No minimum 6-month validity is required for Bulgarian entry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria or Schengen area
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Bulgaria or the Schengen zone ready. This is standard for all visa-free entries.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host with their address and phone number. A printed copy works best.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your trip. Carry a bank statement, credit card, or cash equivalent to at least €50 per day of your stay. ATMs are widely available in Bulgarian cities.Recommended
Bulgaria is not yet in the Schengen Area
Although Bulgaria is an EU member, it is not part of the Schengen free-travel zone. Your 90-day visa-free stay is counted separately from any time spent in Schengen countries. However, time spent in other non-Schengen EU countries (like Romania, Croatia, Cyprus) may also count toward a separate 90-day limit — check each country's rules.
Overstaying can have serious consequences
If you stay beyond 90 days without a visa or extension, you risk a fine (typically 500–2000 BGN), a ban from re-entering Bulgaria or the EU, and potential deportation. Set a calendar reminder to leave before your 90 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border
Whether you fly into Sofia Airport, Varna Airport, or arrive by land from Greece, Turkey, Romania, or Serbia, you'll go through passport control. Have your passport ready and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation) accessible.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They will check your passport validity, look for blank pages, and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp records the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Check that the stamp is legible before walking away.
4
Collect luggage and proceed
After passport control, collect your checked luggage (if any) from the baggage carousel, then walk through customs. There are usually no further checks for tourists.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot take up employment or freelance work. For work, you need a work visa or residence permit arranged by your employer before you travel.
No. The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended. You must leave Bulgaria (or the Schengen area) before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or difficulty re-entering in the future.
If you stay longer than 90 days (which you can't on visa-free entry), you would need to register. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. Hotels handle their own guest registration.
You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires during your stay, you risk being denied re-entry or facing problems with local authorities. Always renew before travel.
Technically, the rule is 6 months from the date of entry. If your passport has less than 6 months, the border officer may deny you entry. It's not worth the risk — renew your passport first.
If you are transiting through a Schengen country (e.g., Germany, Netherlands) to reach Bulgaria, you may need a Schengen transit visa depending on your nationality. Malaysian passport holders do not need a transit visa for most Schengen airports, but check with the airline. For Bulgaria itself, no visa is needed for transit.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas but you'll get change in lev. ATMs are common in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Carry some cash for small purchases.
