Malaysian passport holders need a visa to enter Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option for Malaysian citizens. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Visitor visa application
Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)
Malaysian passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Submit your application online through the IRCC portal — processing takes 2–4 weeks typically. You'll need to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre.Apply for visitor visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary showing you'll leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact info. Border officers may ask where you're staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements, credit card limits, or a letter from your employer showing you have enough money for your trip. There's no fixed minimum, but officers expect at least CAD $1,000–$2,000 for a short visit.Recommended
Apply early — processing can be slow
Visa processing for Canada can take 2–8 weeks or longer during peak seasons. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
Biometrics required
After submitting your online application, you'll need to visit the Visa Application Centre in Kuala Lumpur to give fingerprints and a photo. This is a mandatory step.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, financial proof), and pay the fee (CAD 100 for a single entry, CAD 500 for a multiple-entry visa). Processing takes 2–8 weeks. You may be asked to give biometrics at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Kuala Lumpur.
2
Receive visa decision and sticker
If approved, you'll get a letter and a visa sticker will be placed in your passport (you'll need to submit your passport to the VAC). The sticker shows the validity dates and number of entries. Check it carefully for errors.
3
Book flights and accommodation
Once you have the visa, book your return ticket and first night's stay. Keep digital copies of everything — booking confirmations, insurance, visa approval letter.
4
Arrive at Canadian border
At the airport, go to the 'Visitors' queue. Hand over your passport and visa. The border officer may ask: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and proof of funds. Answer honestly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking.
