Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Costa Rica. Airlines at Kuala Lumpur International Airport may ask for 6 months of validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers at Juan Santamaría International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements or a credit card ready. Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but showing $500–$1,000 USD in available funds covers most situations.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines will not let you board if your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date. Double-check before you book.
Keep your entry card safe
When you enter, you may receive a small immigration card (sometimes called a 'tarjeta de turista'). Do not lose it — you'll need to hand it back when you leave. Losing it can cause delays and a small fine.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return/onward ticket, first-night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance if you have it. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at immigration
At San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) airport, follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Extranjeros'. Join the queue for non-residents. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present documents and receive stamp
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will stamp you in with a 30-day stay. No fee is charged. Keep the stamped entry card (if given) safe — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim and customs. You're now legally in Costa Rica.
