Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Hong Kong. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Hong Kong immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter before you get your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host confirmation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have access to enough money for your stay — a bank statement or credit card usually suffices. Officers almost never check this for short visits, but it's smart to have proof handy.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Hong Kong immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If your passport expires sooner, you will be refused entry — no exceptions.
No visa needed for 90 days
Malaysian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days. This covers tourism, business meetings, and transit. No application or fee required.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or screenshot your return ticket and first night hotel booking, and arrange travel insurance. Also grab a local eSIM so you're connected on arrival.
2
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking.
4
Receive entry stamp and collect luggage
Once approved, you'll get an entry stamp in your passport. Then proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.
