Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Nicaragua. Airlines at check-in may enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers in Nicaragua routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Nicaragua. Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear plan.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card ready to demonstrate you have enough money for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around $500 USD for a short trip is a safe benchmark.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the return ticket
Malaysians get 90 days visa-free, but immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready to avoid delays.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration checks on arrival. If it's close, renew before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Managua International Airport (MGA)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are usually two queues: one for Nicaraguan citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue. Have your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and first night's hotel booking ready.
2
Present documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp your entry, and may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying). Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day tourist entry. No fee is charged. Double-check the stamp shows the correct date and duration before walking away.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage, then go through customs. There's a green channel (nothing to declare) and a red channel (goods to declare). If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.
