Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need an eVisa to enter Somalia. Apply through the official Somalia Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at www.mfa.gov.so. Processing takes a few business days — do not book flights until you have the approval.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Somalia. No minimum validity beyond departure is officially required, but airlines often enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers in Somalia routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host in Somalia can speed up immigration. Officers may ask where you are staying — have the address and contact number handy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry enough cash (USD is widely accepted) or a bank statement showing you can cover your stay. Somalia is a cash-based economy — credit cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels.Recommended
Security situation is volatile
Somalia has active conflict zones and a high risk of terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime. Only travel if absolutely necessary, and always use a trusted local contact or security company. Register with your embassy on arrival.
No visa on arrival — plan ahead
There is no visa on arrival for Malaysian passport holders. You must get the eVisa before you fly. Airlines may deny boarding without proof of an approved visa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Somali eVisa portal (if available) or use a trusted visa service. Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and save your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get the eVisa by email. Download the PDF and save it on your phone. Print a copy as a backup — some airlines ask to see it before boarding.
3
Arrive at Mogadishu or Hargeisa airport
Most international flights land at Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) in Mogadishu or Egal International Airport (HGA) in Hargeisa. Go to the immigration counter, present your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There may be a customs check — declare any large amounts of cash or restricted items. Then you're free to enter Somalia.
