Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Vietnam. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required

Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket to confirm you leave within the 30-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Vietnam. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended

Have access to at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash, cards, or bank statements. Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay.Recommended
No extension for visa-free entries

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or screenshot your return ticket and first night's accommodation. Have a digital or physical copy of your travel insurance.
2
Arrive at the airport in Malaysia
At KLIA or other Malaysian airports, the airline check-in counter will verify your passport validity and return ticket. They may also ask for proof of accommodation. If you're flying VietJet or AirAsia, expect them to be strict about the return ticket.
3
Arrive at a Vietnamese airport
At Tan Son Nhat (HCMC), Noi Bai (Hanoi), or Da Nang airport, proceed to the immigration counter for foreign passports. The queue can be 15-45 minutes. Hand over your passport and return ticket if asked. No visa or fee is required. You'll get a 30-day entry stamp.
4
Exit the airport
After clearing immigration, collect your luggage and proceed through customs. There's no arrival declaration required. You're free to enter Vietnam.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a tourist visa (eVisa or embassy visa) before you travel. Overstaying even one day incurs a fine of 500,000 VND (~$21 USD) per day, capped at 5,000,000 VND (~$210 USD) for up to 10 days. Longer overstays may lead to deportation and a ban.
You have two options: 1) Apply for an eVisa online before travel — single entry 30 days ($25 USD) or multiple entry 30 days ($50 USD). Both can be extended once for an additional 30 days. 2) Apply for a 90-day tourist visa at a Vietnamese embassy or through an agent (~$50–120 USD). These also allow one 30-day extension.
No, as long as you stay airside (in the international transit area) and have a confirmed onward ticket within 24 hours. If you leave the airport or stay overnight, you need a visa. Transit through land borders always requires a visa.
The top reasons are: no return ticket (35% of denials), insufficient funds (25%), suspicious travel patterns like frequent short trips (20%), overstay history (10%), and incomplete documents like missing hotel bookings (10%). Always carry proof of onward travel, funds, and accommodation.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, short business visits, and family visits only. For work, you need a work visa (LD1/LD2) sponsored by a Vietnamese employer. For study, you need a student visa (DH). Working without the correct visa can lead to fines, deportation, and a ban.
No vaccines are required for entry. However, the following are recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine vaccines (MMR, DTaP, polio, varicella, influenza). Consider Hepatitis B, Rabies, and Japanese Encephalitis depending on your itinerary. Dengue fever is common, especially during rainy season (May–October) — use mosquito repellent.
Extensions are only available for visa holders (not visa-free entries). Visit the Immigration Department in Ho Chi Minh City (333 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1), Hanoi (44 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District), or Da Nang (7 Tran Quy Cap Street, Hai Chau District). Hours are Mon–Fri, typically 07:30–11:30 and 13:00–16:30. Expect queues. Alternatively, use a visa agent for a fee (~$25–50 USD).
