Border crossing times
Maseru Bridge border post is open 24 hours, but other crossings like Caledonspoort or Ficksburg Bridge have limited hours (usually 6am–10pm). If you're arriving late, plan to cross at Maseru Bridge to avoid being stuck at a closed gate.
Passport validity is critical
Even though you don't need a visa, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel — border officials are strict about this.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border crossing
You'll enter Lesotho either at Maseru Bridge (the main border post from South Africa) or at one of the other land crossings. There are no direct flights from Mozambique to Lesotho, so you'll likely fly into Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) and then take a bus or drive to the border.
2
Proceed to immigration desk
At the border post, go to the immigration hall. Join the queue for foreign passport holders. Have your passport ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask where you're staying, how long you plan to stay, and your purpose of visit. Answer clearly and honestly. You'll receive an entry stamp valid for up to 30 days.
4
Collect your belongings and enter
After stamping, you're free to enter Lesotho. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

No, you don't. Mozambican citizens can enter Lesotho visa-free for up to 30 days. Just have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity and one blank page.
No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country and re-enter, or apply for a proper visa at a Lesotho embassy before your trip. Overstaying can lead to fines or deportation.
Immigration may ask to see proof of onward travel. If you can't show it, you might be questioned further or, in rare cases, denied entry. It's best to have a ticket or at least a bus/plane reservation out of Lesotho.
No, entry for Mozambican citizens is free. You won't pay a visa fee. However, if you're driving a vehicle, there may be road or carbon tax fees at the border post.
There are no direct flights from Mozambique to Lesotho. You'll fly to Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport) in South Africa, then take a shuttle, bus, or drive to the border. The most common entry point is Maseru Bridge, about 1.5 hours from Johannesburg.
If you're visiting family or friends, carry their contact details and address. If you're on holiday, have your hotel booking confirmation. If you're on business, carry an invitation letter from the company in Lesotho. These aren't always required but can speed things up if asked.
Lesotho is generally safe, but like anywhere, exercise normal precautions. Keep valuables out of sight, avoid walking alone at night in cities, and be aware of your surroundings. The mountain areas are beautiful but remote — plan your routes and inform someone of your plans.
