Nigerian passport holders need a visa to enter France in 2026. You must apply at the French embassy or consulate before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for tourism or business. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (short-stay)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the French consulate or visa application centre in Nigeria. The official portal is France-Visas, where you fill the online application form, pay the fee (€80 for adults), and book an appointment. Processing takes 15 calendar days on average, but start at least 3 weeks before travel.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen area
Your Nigerian passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your exit date from the Schengen zone. It must have been issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages for visa stamps. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at French airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. A flight booking confirmation or paid ticket works. If you plan to overland to a non-Schengen country, have a bus or train ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation for every night of your stay, or a signed attestation d'accueil (host declaration) if staying with a friend or relative. French border police sometimes ask for this at passport control, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry bank statements from the last 3 months showing at least €65 per day of your stay (or €120 per day if no accommodation is prepaid). A credit card with a sufficient limit also works. French officers rarely check this for short-stay visa holders, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take up to 45 days during peak seasons. Don't book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is approved.
Schengen area access
A French visa allows you to travel to all 27 Schengen countries (e.g., Germany, Italy, Spain) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your first point of entry must be France.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the France-Visas website (france-visas.gouv.fr) and fill out the Schengen visa application form. Print the completed form and sign it. You'll also need to book an appointment on the VFS Global Nigeria website.
2
Attend your visa appointment
Go to the VFS Global centre in Abuja or Lagos (or the French embassy in Abuja) on your scheduled date. Bring your printed application, passport, photos, and all supporting documents. You'll submit biometrics (photo and fingerprints).
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30-45 days during peak seasons (summer, Christmas). You can track your application online with the reference number from VFS.
4
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll receive an SMS or email. Collect your passport from the VFS centre or have it couriered to you. If approved, check the visa sticker carefully for correct dates and spelling.
5
Arrive in France
At the airport in France (e.g., Charles de Gaulle, Orly), join the 'All Passports' queue. Present your passport with the visa sticker, your return ticket, and proof of accommodation. The border officer may ask about your trip purpose and funds.

Frequently asked questions

No. There is no visa-on-arrival for Nigerian passport holders. You must obtain a Schengen visa from the French embassy or VFS Global before you travel.
Standard processing is 15 calendar days, but it can take up to 30-45 days during busy periods (summer, Christmas, Easter). Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your planned travel date.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 (about ₦70,000) for adults, €40 for children aged 6-12, and free for children under 6. VFS Global also charges a service fee of around ₦15,000-20,000. Fees are non-refundable.
You apply through VFS Global centres in Abuja (Plot 123, Ahmadu Bello Way) and Lagos (Plot 1, Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island). The French embassy in Abuja also handles some applications. You must book an appointment online.
You need: a valid passport (6+ months validity), completed visa application form, passport-sized photos, return flight booking, hotel reservation or invitation letter, travel insurance (€30,000 coverage), bank statements from the last 3 months, and proof of employment or leave.
Extensions are rarely granted and only for exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure). You must apply at the prefecture in France before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from the Schengen area.
You will receive a formal refusal letter stating the reason. You can appeal the decision within 30 days at the French embassy or file a new application addressing the issues. Common reasons: insufficient funds, weak travel history, or incomplete documents.
