Apply for a visa before travel
Nigeria passport holders need a visa to enter Tonga. Apply through the Tonga Immigration Division at immigration.gov.to. Processing times vary — start at least 4 weeks before your trip.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Tonga. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers in Tonga ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone. If you're flying out to a third country, that ticket works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a confirmed hotel booking or a letter from your host in Tonga ready. Officers occasionally ask for it during the visa application process or at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough funds for your trip. Tonga doesn't publish a fixed amount, but having at least 500 TOP (approx $210 USD) per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccination required
You must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) upon arrival. Without it, you may be quarantined or denied entry. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel.
Healthcare is limited
Medical facilities in Tonga are basic, especially on outer islands. For serious conditions, you may need evacuation to New Zealand or Australia. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly advised.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to immigration.gov.to and fill out the visa application form. Upload a clear copy of your passport bio page, your flight itinerary, and accommodation details. Pay the fee (TOP 200 for single entry, TOP 400 for multiple entry). Wait 5–10 business days for approval. You will receive a visa approval letter by email — print it and carry it with you.
2
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, double-check your passport has at least 6 months of validity beyond your departure date from Tonga. Print your visa approval letter, return ticket, and hotel booking. Save digital copies on your phone as backup. Pack a pen for the arrival card.
3
Arrive at Fuaʻamotu International Airport
After landing, follow signs to the immigration hall. Join the queue for foreign passport holders. When it's your turn, hand over your passport, visa approval letter, and completed arrival card. The officer may ask about your accommodation and return ticket — answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with a 30-day stay. Collect your luggage and proceed to customs.
