Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Costa Rica. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Costa Rican law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Costa Rican immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — they check this at passport control.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have your hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host ready. A simple printed reservation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica may ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly $100 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement, credit card, or cash in hand works. They rarely check this for short visits from Dutch passport holders.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions. Check your passport now.
Entry stamp check
After immigration stamps your passport, look at the stamp immediately. It shows the number of days you're allowed to stay. If it's less than 180, ask the officer politely to confirm. Mistakes happen.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or screenshot your return/onward ticket, and save your first-night hotel booking confirmation. Also download a local eSIM or buy a SIM at the airport.
2
Arrive at San José Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) or Liberia (LIR)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the line for foreign visitors. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying). Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90 or 180). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If it's less than you expected, ask politely for clarification.
4
Collect luggage and exit customs
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to declare goods. Green lane = nothing to declare, red lane = goods to declare. Keep your passport and boarding pass handy.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 180 days per visit. The exact number is usually stamped in your passport on arrival. Extensions are not possible for tourists.
No. The 180-day visa-free period is not extendable for tourism. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Costa Rica and re-enter after a short absence, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Yes. Any onward ticket out of Costa Rica works — it doesn't have to be a return to the Netherlands. A bus ticket to Panama or a flight to Nicaragua also counts.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by immigration. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land. Renew your passport before traveling.
No, it's not mandatory. But it's strongly recommended because medical costs in Costa Rica are high. A simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of dollars, and evacuation insurance is wise for remote areas.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. However, many digital nomads do it quietly. Costa Rica has a specific Digital Nomad Visa for longer stays (up to 1 year) if you want to be fully legal.
Always carry your passport (or a clear photocopy) and a copy of your entry stamp. Police or immigration can ask for ID at any time. Keep the original in a hotel safe and carry a photocopy.
