Dutch passport holders can travel to Estonia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Estonia joined the Schengen Area in 2007. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Estonia
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Estonia does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline might enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Tallinn Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. A printed copy or a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Estonia can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly €100 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Estonia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay applies across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Estonia and the rest of Schengen.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Tallinn Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA/Schengen and non-Schengen. As a Dutch passport holder, use the EU/EEA lane. Have your passport ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and accommodation. Answer clearly and briefly. They rarely ask for proof of funds or return ticket, but have them accessible.
2
Passport check
The officer will scan your passport and may stamp it. For short stays, they usually don't stamp. If they do, it's a small rectangular stamp with the date. Keep your passport safe.
3
Baggage claim and customs
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Customs is usually green channel for most travellers. If you have nothing to declare, walk straight through.

Frequently asked questions

No. Dutch citizens can enter Estonia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, that counts toward the 90-day limit.
Generally no for tourism. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure). You'd need to apply at the Police and Border Guard Board in Estonia before your 90 days expire.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Estonia. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by the airline or entry by border control.
Not usually, but border officers can ask. Have a credit card or bank statement handy. There's no set amount, but around €50-100 per day is a safe guideline.
Not for entry, but strongly recommended. Estonia is part of the Schengen Area, and medical costs can be high. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical expenses and repatriation is cheap peace of mind.
Yes, as a tourist you can do digital nomad work (e.g., remote work for a foreign employer). But you cannot take a local job or provide services to Estonian companies without a work permit. Estonia also has a specific Digital Nomad Visa if you plan to stay longer than 90 days.
