Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hong Kong. No 6-month validity rule applies here — just cover your stay dates. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready. If you're flying out to mainland China or Macau, that counts as onward travel.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers rarely ask for it, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host makes the entry process smoother. If you're staying with friends, a simple invitation with their Hong Kong ID number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
No fixed amount is published, but carrying a credit card and some cash (around 5,000 HKD equivalent) covers you. Immigration may ask how you'll support yourself — a bank statement or card limit screenshot answers that.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's close to expiry, renew it before you fly. Airlines may also refuse boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.
No visa needed, but be prepared
While there's no visa application, immigration officers can still ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Approach the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return ticket and accommodation details. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away. If it shows fewer days than expected, ask the officer to correct it.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim carousels, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. If you have food, alcohol, or large amounts of cash, use the red channel.
