Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Latvia. Latvia follows Schengen rules — your passport just needs to be valid for your stay, not 6 months beyond. Airlines may still enforce 6 months validity, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Riga Airport checks for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. A flight to another Schengen country doesn't count — you need proof you'll leave the entire Schengen area within your 90-day visa-free limit.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host ready. Border officers at Riga Airport sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Latvia doesn't publish a fixed amount, but carry enough cash or a credit card to cover your stay. Officers may ask how you'll fund your trip — a bank statement or card with a decent limit works fine.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries, not just Latvia. If you've already spent 60 days in France, you only have 30 days left for Latvia and the rest of Schengen.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga Airport or border crossing
At Riga International Airport (RIX), follow signs to 'EU/EEA/Switzerland' passport control. For land borders from Estonia or Lithuania, you'll go through a combined Schengen exit/entry check.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your Dutch passport. The officer will check validity and may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Show supporting documents if asked
If requested, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, or proof of funds. Have them ready in a folder or on your phone.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. Keep it safe — you'll need it for exit.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, count those days too.
No, the visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
Technically no, but immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. If you're driving, show your vehicle registration or a ferry booking out of Schengen. Better to have something.
You'll be denied entry. Latvia requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. Renew your passport before traveling.
Not strictly required for entry, but strongly recommended. If you need medical care, costs can be high. Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers some things but not all — private insurance fills the gaps.
Yes, you can work remotely for a non-Latvian employer without a visa, as long as you don't enter the local job market. But if you stay more than 90 days, you'd need a digital nomad visa or residence permit.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from Schengen, or deportation. The fine is typically around €100–300, but it's recorded in the system. Don't risk it — track your days carefully.
