Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Montenegro. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Montenegro
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Podgorica and Tivat airports. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a reservation. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Officers can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €50 per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies them.Recommended
Border crossings with Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo
If you're driving, expect queues at peak summer weekends (especially the Debeli Brijeg crossing from Croatia). Have your passport and vehicle registration ready. EU driving license is fine.
Overstaying the 90-day limit
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of around €50–€200 and a ban from re-entering for up to 6 months. Set a reminder on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Podgorica or Tivat airport, or drive in from Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, or Kosovo, you'll go through passport control. The queue at Podgorica is usually quick (10–20 minutes). Tivat can be slower in summer.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your Dutch passport. The officer will check validity and stamp it. No visa, no forms, no fee.
3
Answer any questions
You might be asked how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Have your accommodation address and return ticket ready. Answer calmly and honestly.
4
Collect your passport and go
Once stamped, you're free to enter. Keep the stamp safe — you'll need it when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

No, not without a visa or residence permit. The 90-day limit applies per 180-day period. Overstaying can result in fines of €50–€200 and a ban from re-entering for up to 6 months. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at the local police station before your 90 days are up.
Your hotel or accommodation host is required to register you within 24 hours. If you're staying in a private home, the host should do it. If you're camping or staying in an unregistered place, you may need to register yourself at the local police station. In practice, most tourists never deal with this — hotels handle it automatically.
Yes, if you're a Dutch passport holder, you don't need a visa anyway. But if you're a non-EU resident of the Netherlands, a valid Schengen residence permit allows visa-free entry to Montenegro for up to 90 days.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Dutch passport holders can enter Kosovo visa-free for up to 90 days, and Bosnia visa-free for up to 90 days. No special visa needed for either. But always check current rules before crossing borders.
No. There is no departure tax for air or land exits. You just go through passport control and leave.
Tourist visa-free entry does not permit work, including remote work for a foreign employer. Technically, any work requires a work permit. In practice, many digital nomads do it quietly, but it's a grey area. Montenegro does not have a specific digital nomad visa as of 2026.
