Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Mongolia. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Mongolia. Officers rarely ask, but if you can't show where you're staying, they may question your plans.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly 50 USD per day of your stay. Immigration doesn't always ask, but budget travelers get flagged more often.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Mongolian immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
No visa, no fee — but be prepared
You don't need to pay anything at the border. However, having a return ticket and first-night accommodation ready can speed things up if asked.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and print or save your return ticket and first night's accommodation confirmation. Also arrange travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM.
2
Arrive at the airport
At Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' after disembarking. The queue can be slow during peak hours (morning and late evening).
3
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport and any requested documents (return ticket, accommodation). The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. No visa fee is charged.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's a green channel for standard goods and a red channel for items to declare. Keep your passport handy for random checks.
