Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Namibia
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Namibia does not require six months of validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce the six-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Namibia
Immigration officers at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. A bus or land border exit ticket also works if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed reservation confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds — around NAD 1,000 per day or a credit card statement showing available credit. A bank statement from the last month or a wad of cash works fine.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Namibia. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you go. Airlines may also check this before allowing you to board.
Keep a copy of your entry stamp
Take a photo of the entry stamp in your passport. If you lose your passport or need to prove your legal stay, that photo can be a lifesaver.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are usually separate queues for foreigners and Namibian citizens. Join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport (with at least 1 blank page and 6+ months validity) and your return/onward ticket. The officer may ask about your purpose of visit and accommodation. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor's entry permit valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim area. Then walk through the 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted goods. If you're carrying cash over N$50,000 (or equivalent), you must declare it.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Namibia before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different type of visa or permit from a Namibian embassy before traveling.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Namibia. The exact penalty depends on how long you overstay. Avoid it by keeping track of your entry date.
If you're transiting and won't leave the international transit area of the airport, you generally don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements (passport validity, onward ticket, etc.).
Yes, you can enter Namibia by land from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, or Angola. The same visa-free rules apply — you just need to go through immigration at the border post. Common crossings include Vioolsdrift (from South Africa) and Ngoma Bridge (from Botswana).
No vaccinations are mandatory for entry from the Netherlands. However, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever, you'll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. It's also a good idea to be up to date on routine vaccines and consider hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies depending on your plans.
The local currency is the Namibian dollar (NAD), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand (ZAR). South African rand is widely accepted. Euros are not commonly accepted, so exchange your euros at the airport or a bank. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and larger shops, but cash is needed for smaller vendors.
Namibia is generally safe for tourists, including solo travelers. Violent crime is low, but petty theft (like bag snatching) can happen in cities. Take standard precautions: don't leave valuables visible in your car, lock your accommodation, and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. The main risks are road safety (animals on roads, long distances) and sun exposure.
