Dutch passport holders can enter Zambia without a visa for stays up to 90 days. This has been the case since 2024 and applies to tourism, business, and short visits. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Zambia
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Zambia does not require six months of validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the six-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask to see it
Zambian immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Without one, you risk being denied entry.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers sometimes request a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Zambia. A simple booking confirmation on your phone usually suffices. If staying with friends, have their contact details and address written down.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask for evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit works. No specific amount is published, but having at least $500 USD equivalent is a safe bet.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive in Zambia, not your departure date. Double-check before you book flights.
No visa needed — just show up
Dutch passport holders get 90 days visa-free. No application, no fee, no embassy visit. Just make sure your passport is valid and you have a return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka) or other entry point
You'll go through immigration control. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days.
2
Collect your luggage and proceed through customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually straightforward — just walk through unless you have something to declare.
3
Exit the arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave. There are ATMs, currency exchange counters, and taxi stands just outside.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Zambia before the 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a different visa type before your trip.
Zambia requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. The Netherlands is not a risk country, so you won't need it if you're flying directly from Europe. But if you've recently been in a yellow fever zone, you'll need proof of vaccination.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Zambian immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. For work or study, you need a separate permit or visa arranged before you travel.
No, there is no arrival declaration required for Dutch passport holders. You just show your passport and supporting documents at immigration.
The local currency is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). US dollars are widely accepted for larger payments, but you'll get better rates using kwacha. ATMs are available in cities. Avoid exchanging money on the street.
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements.
