Norwegians can enter Belgium without a visa for short stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, thanks to the Schengen Agreement. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after the date you plan to leave Belgium (and the entire Schengen zone). The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Belgian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you will leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines flying into Brussels often check this before letting you board. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound itinerary ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host in Belgium ready. Immigration officers may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means of support for your stay
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your trip — roughly €45 per day of your stay. A bank statement, credit card, or cash works. Officers rarely ask for this for Norwegian passport holders, but have a bank statement or card ready just in case.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries (including France, Germany, Netherlands, etc.). Days spent in any Schengen country count toward your total. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive in Belgium, not your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Belgian border (airport or land crossing)
At Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi (CRL), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. For land crossings from France, Netherlands, Germany, or Luxembourg, there are no routine checks — you just drive through.
2
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They may stamp your passport (not always done for EU citizens, but Norwegians are treated as EU/EEA for border purposes).
3
Provide supporting documents if asked
If requested, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. This is rare for Norwegians, but have them accessible in your bag or phone.
4
Receive entry clearance and proceed
Once cleared, you're free to enter Belgium. You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks.

Frequently asked questions

No. Norway is part of the Schengen Area, so you can enter Belgium visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the total.
You'll need to apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit from the Belgian immigration office (Office des Étrangers) before your 90 days expire. This is not automatic — you must have a valid reason (work, study, family reunion).
Generally no for tourism. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure). You'd need to apply at the local commune (town hall) before your stay expires.
Yes, immigration may ask to see a return or onward ticket. A screenshot on your phone showing a flight, train, or bus booking out of the Schengen Area is sufficient.
Your valid passport (6+ months validity), return/onward ticket, first night accommodation booking, and optionally travel insurance and proof of funds. Keep them in your hand luggage, not checked bags.
Not strictly required at the border, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Belgium can be high, and insurance covers emergencies, repatriation, and trip disruptions.
