Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Bulgaria
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Bulgaria. Norway is in the Schengen zone, so the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — your total stay in Bulgaria plus any other Schengen country cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day window.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof you're leaving Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, bus, or train booking out of Bulgaria ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host in Bulgaria. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. There's no fixed amount, but around 50 EUR per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely check this for Norwegian passport holders.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in Bulgaria. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied entry — even if you plan to leave before it expires.
Overstaying can get you banned
Staying longer than 90 days in any 180-day period is a violation. You may be fined, banned from re-entering Bulgaria or the Schengen area, and have trouble with future travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return flight, and save your accommodation confirmation. Download an eSIM or arrange a local SIM so you have data on arrival.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask about your stay, and will stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. This stamp determines your 90-day allowance. Keep it safe — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Exit Bulgaria
When you leave, present your passport again. The officer stamps you out. Make sure you haven't overstayed your 90 days.
