Norwegian passport holders can visit France without a visa for up to 90 days. From 2026, the Schengen Area allows free movement within that limit. Ensure your passport meets validity rules and carry a return ticket.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Schengen area
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in France and the Schengen area. Norway passport holders get 90 days within any 180-day period across all 27 Schengen countries — not per country. Airlines at Oslo Gardermoen will check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Charles de Gaulle and Orly routinely ask for proof of onward travel. A return ticket to Norway or a ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host ready. French border police sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printout or phone screenshot works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €65 per day of your stay. French immigration rarely checks this for Norwegian passport holders, but it's smart to have it ready if asked.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Your 90-day allowance covers all 27 Schengen countries. If you spend 30 days in Germany and 30 in Italy, you only have 30 days left for France. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
French border officers check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close, renew before you go. A rejected entry means a wasted trip and a return flight.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at French border
At the airport or land border, join the non-EU passport queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer checks passport validity, may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, then stamps your passport with the entry date.
2
Present supporting documents if asked
If requested, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Keep these in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
3
Receive entry stamp
Once cleared, the officer stamps your passport. Check the stamp is legible and shows the correct date. This records your entry into the Schengen Area.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and exit
After immigration, collect your luggage and walk through customs. Use the green channel for nothing to declare, red for goods over the duty-free limit.
