Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Slovenia
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your departure date from Slovenia. This is a Schengen-wide rule enforced at the border. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Ljubljana Airport and land borders routinely ask for proof of onward travel. A return flight, bus ticket to Croatia, or train reservation to Austria all count. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a signed letter from your host with their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Slovenia doesn't publish a fixed daily minimum, but officers expect roughly €50–€70 per day. Cash, credit card, or bank statement all work. If you're staying with friends, a sponsorship letter plus their ID copy helps.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Slovenia is in the Schengen Area. Your 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries. Keep track of your days — overstaying even by one day can cause problems.
Border checks may be random
Even though there are no systematic border checks within Schengen, Slovenia occasionally conducts random checks near borders with Croatia and Hungary. Always carry your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Slovenian border
Whether you fly into Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) or drive from a neighbouring Schengen country, you'll pass through border control. At the airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation confirmation. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from baggage claim if you checked any, and walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. Norway is part of the Schengen Area, so you can enter Slovenia visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling window. This counts all days spent in any Schengen country, not just Slovenia. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Generally no for tourism. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances, such as a medical emergency or force majeure. You'd need to apply at the upravna enota (administrative unit) in Slovenia before your 90 days expire.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area, or both. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. Leave before day 90.
If you're staying in a hotel or hostel, they register you automatically. If staying with friends or family, your host must register you at the local upravna enota within 3 days of your arrival. It's free.
Your passport. Police can ask for ID at any time. A photocopy or digital photo of your passport is useful but not legally sufficient — carry the original.
Tourist visa-free entry does not permit working for a Slovenian employer. Remote work for a foreign employer is generally tolerated for short stays, but it's a grey area. For longer stays, look into Slovenia's digital nomad visa.
