Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Tuvalu. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Tuvalu immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration at Funafuti International Airport will ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before they let you through. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this every time.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Tuvalu. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to at least 1,000 AUD per person for your stay. Tuvalu is remote and expensive — officers want to see you can cover accommodation and a return flight if needed.Recommended
No ATMs on Tuvalu
There are no ATMs anywhere in the country. Bring enough Australian dollars in cash to cover your entire stay. Credit cards are accepted only at the main hotel in Funafuti — and even then, not reliably.
Flights are limited
Fiji Airways flies from Suva to Funafuti only twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays). Plan your itinerary carefully — missing your flight could mean waiting days for the next one.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Funafuti International Airport
You'll land at the only international airport in Tuvalu. The terminal is small — just one building. After deplaning, follow the signs to immigration.
2
Queue at immigration counter
There's usually one or two counters open. Wait your turn, then hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in — no forms to fill.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, grab your bags from the carousel (it's a single belt). Then walk through customs — usually just a quick glance. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave and re-enter, but that's rarely practical given the limited flights.
If you're transiting through Funafuti International Airport and not leaving the airport, you still need to clear immigration because the airport is small and there's no transit area. So the same visa-free rules apply — you can enter for up to 90 days.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Tuvalu immigration. Check your passport's expiry date before booking flights.
No, there's no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if you look like you might overstay or can't support yourself, an officer could ask. It's rare.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism and short business visits only. For work or study, you need to apply for the appropriate visa through the Tuvalu Department of Immigration.
The official currency is the Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are rarely accepted outside the main hotel in Funafuti. Bring enough AUD cash for your stay — there are no ATMs on the island.
No. There's no online arrival declaration. You just show up with your passport and return ticket. No forms to fill on the plane either.
